Carmel dumps St. Patrick

Maybe the tone of this game changed on the game's initial play. That's when Carmel Catholic's Mikey Lucas took the opening kickoff back 65 yards. Three plays later, Carmel had a lead.

Visiting St. Patrick had the most to play for on the last regular season game. A win would send the Shamrocks to the playoffs with a 6-3 mark. It wasn't meant to be. Carmel's defense intercepted three Shamrock passes. One of them went all the way.

Carmel junior Mitchell Geier raced 82 yards with an interception and turned it into 6 points.

"I really wanted to do this for our seniors,'' Geier said. "I tried to turn on the jets and was running out of energy at the end."

Carmel (4-5, 4-3) ended on a high note. The Corsairs posted a 39-25 East Suburban Catholic upset win on Friday night.

Carmel quarterback Stephen Garcia's second toss of the night went to senior Damone-Williams Gray. This twosome hooked up three times on the night and one was a 15-yard scoring play in the third quarter.

"We just wanted to come out and play hard,'' Williams-Gray said. "We had nothing to lose."

It was not a one-sided affair early. The game went to the second quarter tied a t a touchdown each.

By this time, the Shamrocks were getting battered by the rushing effort of sophomore Syone Usma-Harper (18 carries, 149 yards). Harper scored 2 touchdowns in 17 seconds before halftime. Carmel led the break 19-7.

'We had a slow start this year,'' Geier related. "But our defense got better and we also saw improvement on offense."

St. Patrick (5-4, 3-4) also had a solid back in Eric Wozny. And when he bowled over from 4 yards out, the Shamrocks were down just 19-13. But then came the Grier interception and another pick from Brock Deardorff.

Both teams tallied in the final quarter. Harper scored his third TD of the night from two yards out. St. Pat's answered with a short run from its quarterback Jack O'Rourke.
