Girls tennis: West Aurora's Goheen advances to championship

West Aurora senior Maria Goheen advanced to the Class 2A girls tennis state championship match with a straight sets quarterfinal win and a three-set semifinal comeback on Friday.

Goheen defeated Olivia Oosterbaan from Hinsdale Central 6-1, 7-6 (7) in the quarterfinals.

The West Point-bound Goheen was joined in the final four by Belen Nevenhoven from Rockford Auburn, Tyra Richardson (St. Ignatius) and Kiley Rabjohns (Lake Forest).

Goheen, a 3-4 seed, rallied to defeat the No. 2 seed Nevenhoven, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. She improved to 37-0 this year.

Rabjohns won the other semifinal, 6-4, 6-2, and will play Goheen for the title Saturday.

Goheen teamed with Liz Stefancic to win the state doubles championship last year. As a doubles team they went 28-0.

West Aurora is tied for ninth in the team standings with 12 points. St. Charles North is tied for 21st.

In 1A, Kaneland is in eighth place with 11 points.
