Stevenson High celebrates many cultures at annual World's Fair

The portrait of a Stevenson High School graduate, according to the school's vision statement, is a person who will "celebrate, honor, and respect diverse people and perspectives."

That celebration of diversity was on display Saturday when the Lincolnshire school hosted its annual World's Fair.

The event featured 35 booths where students showcased the country of their heritage or a culture in which they have an interest. Later in the day, students displayed the fashion, music and dance of those cultures.

"We have a variety of clubs here. What's really cool is they organize all of this. All of this is student generated," said Assistant Principal Ken Latka.

Besides learning about an array of cultures, visitors to the fair also could sample food from nations across the globe, including Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, India, Germany, Netherlands and Brazil.

The free event continues today, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the West Building of the school, 1 Stevenson Drive, in Lincolnshire. Proceeds from two-day fest go to the Vernon Township Food Pantry.
