Mississinewa renovations begin 3 years after heavy flooding

PERU, Ind. (AP) - A beach concessions building at a northern Indiana reservoir is undergoing renovations more than three years after heavy flooding left it in shambles.

Crews began repairs this month on the building that's long housed Mississinewa (mis-ih-SIHN'-uh-wah) Lake's beach concessions and bathhouse.

The Kokomo Tribune reports heavy rains and storms that caused damage in 19 Indiana counties in July 2015 pushed the reservoir's water levels more than 40 feet above normal.

State lawmakers approved $780,000 for the repairs after FEMA denied Indiana's appeal for federal disaster assistance that included the reservoir's request.

Property manager Larry Brown says the beach concessions and bathhouse will be fully restored and fitted with new showers and toilets. The building should reopen by Memorial Day 2019 at the lake about 65 miles north of Indianapolis.
