Police investigating fatal hit-and-run in downtown Waukgan

Waukegan police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left one person dead in downtown Waukegan Friday morning, authorities said.

Officers were called to the intersection of Washington and Genesee streets at 5:30 a.m. for a report of a person in the road, Waukegan Police said in a news release.

Police found a man in his 40s. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not identified the victim other than he is from Waukegan. The identity will be released after an autopsy is completed and the next of kin is notified, authorities said.

The fatal crash is under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department's tip line at (847) 360-9001.
