Oakton Community College to hold career and major fair Oct. 25

Current and prospective students are invited to discover Oakton Community College and find their futures at the college's major and career fair (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and open house (5:30 to 8 p.m.) Thursday, Oct. 25, at the college's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. The programs are free and open to the public.

At the open house, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with admission and financial aid representatives, tour the campus and ask questions to determine why Oakton is a good fit in terms of academic and career programs, services and student life.

Oakton offers 80 areas of study that range from allied health, science and technology to business and liberal arts. With convenient classes at its Des Plaines and Skokie (7701 N. Lincoln Ave.) campuses, plus courses and programs offered online and at more than 200 off-site locations throughout the community, the college offers students a convenient, affordable choice for a quality college education.

Free gifts will be available for the first 100 open house attendees, and refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored through donor support from the Oakton Community College Educational Foundation.

To reserve a spot at the open house, register online at www.oakton.edu/discover or call (847) 635-1835. To schedule an individual visit, ask for Student Recruitment and Outreach when calling.

At the major and career fair, sponsored by the Career and Transfer Center, students can get a flavor of the college by meeting with representatives from Oakton's offices and departments including Advising, Transitions and Student Success, Student Life, Honors at Oakton, Learning Center and TRIO Student Support Services. In addition, attendees will be able to meet with representatives from four-year colleges including Roosevelt University, Elmhurst College, Northeastern Illinois University, Lake Forest College, Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University and DePaul University.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about various areas of study including biology, early childhood education, global studies, manufacturing technology, modern languages, music, nursing and technical communication. Free career exploration workshops are also scheduled at noon and 1 p.m., presented by representatives from Lake Forest College and Northern Illinois University at Oakton's Student Center.

"This fair is meant to help students who are undecided about their futures," says Oakton Transfer Coordinator Brian Bacon. "We are the community's college, and by showcasing Oakton's academic departments as well as other universities, our goal is to inform the public about the different educational opportunities that are available and to aid in students' exploration of both transfer and career possibilities."
