Local firefighters can learn new rescue skills at Nov. 2 program

In crashes where minutes can spell the difference between life and death, first responders to the accident scene need up-to-date information so they can act quickly and safely.

Knowing specifically where and how to efficiently cut and extricate can make the difference in saving precious minutes and lives as well as the safety of the first responders.

Keeping firefighters up-to-date on the latest new technology in vehicles is a challenge for every local fire department.

The National Auto Body Council's First Responder Emergency Extrication program (F.R.E.E.) keeps first responders current on the rapid changes in vehicle design. High-strength steel, air bags, advanced restraint systems, onboard technology and safety around alternative fuel vehicles are all covered in the program.

Body Builders Automotive Inc., 3960 Industrial Ave. in Rolling Meadows, will host firefighters from Rolling Meadows, Palatine, Arlington Heights and surrounding Northwest suburbs fire departments at a special instruction and guidance program on Friday, Nov. 2.

It will begin with breakfast at 8:45 a.m., classes at 9:30 a.m. and hands-on extrication at 11 a.m.

Late model vehicles will be on hand for extrication training. Learning where, when and why to cut and pry will be covered in numerous accident scenarios. Find out more about new materials such as boron steel, high-strength steel and aluminum/alloys and how to deal with them while extricating. They also will focus on safety and extrication procedures while working around hybrid vehicles.

First responders can register by emailing MariaQ@bodybuildersauto.com or calling (847) 670-8383.

All the salvage vehicles are donated by Allstate Insurance Co. and towing is provided by Rogner's Towning. The electric/hybrid display is courtesy of Arlington Nissan.
