9½-year prison sentence for Palatine man involved in 2016 shooting

A 22-year-old Palatine man who authorities say was involved in a shooting nearly two years ago in Rolling Meadows was sentenced Wednesday to 9½ years in prison, court records show.

Christian Ruiz, of the 1900 block of Cambridge Court, was convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm. He received credit for 674 days in custody.

The shooting took place Dec. 28, 2016, in the parking lot of the Coach Light Condominiums along Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows, according to police, who described Ruiz as a suspected gang member. They did not give a motive for the shooting.

Authorities said the victim, who does not have gang affiliations, was treated at a hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

In 2015, Ruiz and his sister accused Wheeling police officers of excessive force after the siblings were arrested following a disturbance at an apartment complex. An internal investigation cleared the officers.

Ruiz later pleaded guilty to obstructing police and was sentenced to five days in jail.
