Scouting the Colorado Rockies

The Cubs host the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night in the National League wild-card game. The winner advances to the NL division series vs. the Brewers and the loser goes home.

Record

After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday in the NL West tiebreaker, the Rockies finished the regular season at 91-72. Colorado was 3-3 vs. the Cubs (2-1 at Wrigley).

Probable starter

Kyle Freeland gets the nod for the Rockies vs. Jon Lester and the Cubs. A 25-year-old lefty, Freeland led the Rockies in wins (17) and ERA (2.85) this year. Freeland won his last 8 decisions but was much better at home (10-2, 2.40 ERA) than on the road (7-5, 3.23). The 6-foot-3, 170-pounder started vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 30 and took the loss after allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

Batter up

Colorado ranked second in the NL with 778 runs scored and third with 208 home runs. Star third baseman Nolan Arenado led the Rockies with a .297 batting average, 38 home runs and 110 RBI. Shortstop Trevor Story hit .291 with 37 homers and 108 RBI.

Familiar face

Wade Davis is the Rockies' closer, the same role he capably filled with the Cubs last season. Davis led the NL with 43 saves and was especially sharp in September, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 7 saves in as many chances.
