Annual 'Something Wicked' exhibit returns to Side Street Studio Arts
Side Street Studio Arts in downtown Elgin will open its sixth annual monthlong visual art exhibition "Something Wicked" this weekend.
Originally developed in conjunction with Elgin artists John LaFleur and David Metzter, "Something Wicked" will feature a record 40-plus artists working in a variety of media, whose subject matter is meant to instill a combined sense of wonder, awe, and perhaps a little dread. The exhibition kicks off with the First Friday Opening Reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court.
It will feature live music from August Hotel and Dirty Water. The event is open to the public and there is a $5 suggested donation at the door.
In the "Lab at SSSA" in partnership with Elgin Bike Hub, artist-educators will host bike-decorating activities for the whole family in anticipation of Elgin Bike Hub's Starlight Parade later Friday evening.
All are welcome to decorate and light up their bikes in the Lab before or after the 7 p.m. Starlight Parade. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door.
"Since opening in 2013, Something Wicked has been one of our most successful events," said Erin Rehberg, Side Street founder and director. "The spooky fun of the visual art and the engaging performers, combined with the brewing energy of downtown Elgin in October, leading up to Nightmare on Chicago Street, makes the whole month such a wonderfully wicked time."
Side Street Studio Arts was founded by Tanner Melvin and Rehberg in 2013 as an outlet for the Elgin arts scene. Currently under the direction of Amanda Harris, Roberto Martinez, Melvin, and Rehberg, it provides educational and creative resources and an inclusive space, run by artists. Side Street's mission is to support the artist and artistic journey through collaboration.
