Carol Stream resident diagnosed with West Nile virus
A Carol Stream resident has been diagnosed with West Nile virus, village officials announced Wednesday.
The village has coordinated with Clarke Mosquito Control to conduct additional testing and treat areas found to be breeding mosquitoes with larvicide, officials said in a Facebook post. Village officials say residents should drain standing water, use insect repellent, limit skin exposure and remember that mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn.
The Illinois Department of Public Health's most recent report indicated 22 cases of West Nile virus in the state this year, including a LaSalle County resident who died.
In 2017, there were 90 human cases of West Nile virus, including eight deaths, according to the department.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms.
