In remembrance of A. George Pradel

George Pradel, a "man for all seasons," served his country and community, stepping out on faith, with love and commitment. He always found ways to give of himself, whether as a marine, police officer, mayor, husband, father or friend. He did it with a heart filled with goodness and kindness, rightfully earning the name "Officer Friendly."

Naperville benefited from his leadership, and continues to benefit today. His ability to touch people's hearts, and meet them where they were, far outweighed his lack of political experience when he first ran for mayor. People knew his character, his heart, and his ability to serve, and trusted over 20 years of leadership in his hands.

I have worked as a community advocate for multicultural awareness and racial justice. George Pradel was the mayor through most of these years. He always had an open door of support, taking the time to take my phone calls at the mayor's office.

He served as my companion to several cultural affairs. When I sponsored the first Diwali Celebration ever held in Naperville, I actually got him to dance with me. When I held food drives for hurricanes Hugo and Andrew in the early 1990s, he never hesitated in his support by assuring that I received the appropriate city services needed.

He was a kind and generous man who made you feel that you mattered. His ability to touch the hearts of man has certainly earned him a place in the annals of the city's history.

Nelson Mandela said, "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."

Rest in peace, my friend.
