Aurora man accused of leading police on Labor Day chase

A man accused of leading police officers on a chase that reached 60 mph through Aurora neighborhoods early Monday morning has been arrested.

Aurora police were responding to reports of a shooting on the 800 block of Grove Street about 3:10 a.m. Monday when an officer spotted a 2003 Nissan Altima speeding near Farnsworth Avenue and Sheffer Road, police said in a Wednesday news release. The driver quickly slowed down and turned east on Sheffer Road with the officer in pursuit, police said.

When the driver turned south onto McClure Road, a passenger in the rear seat ran from the car into a soybean field and was not located. The driver then continued south, speeding at up to 60 mph and driving through several stop signs before eventually stopping in the 800 block of Birchwood Drive, police said.

The driver - later identified as 21-year-old Angel Cuevas - then fled the vehicle and ran through backyards until officers found him hiding in bushes on the 1200 block of Sheffer Road just before 5 a.m., police said.

Police who searched the vehicle reported finding two rounds of ammunition on a seat.

A 20-year-old Montgomery woman and 22-year-old Aurora woman who were passengers in the car were released without being charged, police said.

Cuevas was charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing police. He also was issued traffic tickets for driving without a license, failure to signal, speeding and disobeying two stop signs, police said.

Cuevas was being held in Kane County jail on $100,000 bail.

Police continue to investigate.
