Palatine council salutes Sanborn Elementary School

Palatine's Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School received a village council salute to mark its 70th anniversary, which occurs Saturday, Sept. 1.

Some Sanborn students, parents and Principal Erika Johansen attended a recent village council meeting to receive the proclamation during a ceremony led by Mayor Jim Schwantz. He said the school is "very near and dear to my heart."

"I stand before you as a Sanborn Elementary graduate myself," Schwantz said.

Local trivia buffs should know the building opened as Oak Street School on Sept. 1, 1948. It was renamed Gray M. Sanborn School in 1963 after the first Palatine Township Elementary District 15 board president. Sanborn served on the board from 1946 to 1956.

Sanborn Elementary originally served students in kindergarten through eighth grade. District 15's growing population eventually led to its conversion to a building for kindergarten through sixth grade.
