Back to school in Wheeling Township District 21

There were plenty of happy hugs - and a few sad ones - on Wednesday when students at Longfellow Elementary School in Buffalo Grove returned to class from summer break.

The school is one of 13 in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21. Altogether, the district educates about 7,000 students in several communities, including Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights.

It's a big year outside the classroom as well as inside for District 21.

In November, district voters will decide on a proposed $69 million bond issue to fund building improvements such as air conditioning, technology upgrades and tighter security.

The referendum is the district's first since 2003.
