GoFundMe started for family of suburban woman who drowned in Florida

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help with funeral expenses for a Round Lake Park woman who drowned in Florida Thursday while on vacation.

Maria R. Perez, 35, was on a family trip with friends and relatives and swimming in the ocean for the first time in her life, according to friend Juan Rodriguez of Round Lake, who was on the trip. Perez and five others — including her husband and daughter — were pulled out to sea around 7 p.m. by what Miami Beach police believe was a riptide current.

All six people were rescued, but Perez later died at a hospital; police say she likely drowned.

As of Saturday evening, the campaign had raised more than $500 of its $10,000 goal.
