Lake County communities' police, residents to come together for National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual event held around the country the first Tuesday in August, intended to promote partnership between the police and the communities they protect. For more information about National Night Out, visit natw.org.

The 35th annual National Night Out will be on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Here are some of the activities villages and police departments in and around Lake County have planned:

Friday, Aug. 3

<h3 class="leadin">Lincolnshire: 5-8 p.m. North Park, 1025 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. There will be a number of law enforcement and public safety activities such as a police dog demonstration, touch-a-car displays, an interactive forensic table and various activities and games. Free. <h3 class="leadin">Waukegan: 4-8 p.m. Waukegan Municipal Beach, 201 Seahorse Drive, Waukegan. Join the Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Park District for a family event with police dog demonstrations, bounce house, games, live music, and a Touch-a-Truck with more than 20 pieces of heavy machinery and emergency response vehicles to explore. This year's event will include Police vs. Fire Tug of War. Food will be available for purchase. Visit www.waukeganweb.net.

Tuesday, Aug. 7

<h3 class="leadin">Antioch: 5-9 p.m. Antioch Bandshell, 900 Skidmore Drive, Antioch. Free hot dogs, face painting, police dog demonstration, Antioch Police Explorers, squad cars and more. Includes Community Outdoor Movie Night with a showing of "Max" (2015). Visit www.antioch.il.gov. Buffalo Grove: 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Road, Buffalo Grove. Event includes a business expo, Picnic in the Park, inflatable attractions and face painting, Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Department displays, free hot dogs, chips and drinks and free giveaways. Live music with Sway Chicago from 6-8 p.m. Bring a nonperishable food item to the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council; items will be distributed through local food pantries. <h3 class="leadin">Fox Lake: 6-8 p.m. Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd., Fox Lake. Includes police, fire and public works department vehicles on display; Free hot dogs and activities for all ages. Visit www.granttownshipcenter.org.

<h3 class="leadin">Highland Park: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Highland Park city hall, 1707 St. John's Ave., Highland Park. Activities include a petting zoo, pony rides, Touch-a-Truck, face painting, DUI simulator, bounce house, dunk tank, music, snacks and more. Police dog demonstration at 6:45 p.m. and a doughnut-eating contest at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.hplibrary.org.

<h3 class="leadin">Island Lake: 6-8 p.m. Veterans Park, 316 Island Drive, Island Lake. Coloring books, LED finger lights and ice cream for the kids. Meet the police and get a look at squad cars close up. Visit villageofislandlake.com.

Mundelein: 7-10:30 p.m. Santa Maria Del Popolo Church grounds, 116 N. Seymour Ave., Mundelein. Begins with tie-dye T-shirts and socks, fire engine rides, and other activities. Hot dogs, tacos and other snacks will be available for purchase with proceeds going to Illinois Special Olympics. Bring a blanket or chair to watch the movie "Wonder" on the outdoor screen; the Mundelein Police Department will serve free popcorn and treats during the movie. Visit police.mundelein.org.

<h3 class="leadin">Round Lake: 5-8 p.m. Round Lake Police Department, 741 W. Townline Road, Antioch. There will be free hot dogs, popcorn and snow cones, along with hay rides, a puppet show, a silent bicycle auction, a bounce house and a foam machine. Save-A-Pet, the library, and LCC Comfort Dogs will be present. There will also be police and fire vehicles, and a car show with prizes. Visit www.eroundlake.com.

Vernon Hills: 4-8 p.m. Hartmann Park on Oakwood Road, Vernon Hills. Free food and drinks, including Chick-fil-A sandwiches, inflatables, water spray, Cook Library Bookmobile, live D.J., face painting, kids games and more. Volleyball matches pit the Vernon Hills Police Department against teams from other local organizations. Visit www.vernonhills.org.

Thursday, Aug. 9

<h3 class="leadin">Barrington: 6:30-9 p.m. Cook and Station streets, downtown Barrington. Learn more about BStrong Together during Cruise Night. Kids can see and climb into police and fire vehicles and receive a bike and helmet safety check. There will also be digital fin­gerprinting and ID kits.
