Prospect Heights shooter sentenced to 13 years
A 20-year-old Prospect Heights man, who authorities say fired at a vehicle from the bike he was riding, was sentenced to 13 years in prison Monday.
Court records show Decy Ayala pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm in a November 2016 shooting that took place in a Prospect Heights shopping center parking lot in the 600 block of Milwaukee Avenue.
A police spokeswoman said the victim was in a car waiting for his wife to return from the grocery store when he recognized Ayala as a local gang member. As the victim drove away, Ayala and other gang members gave chase, police said.
Authorities said Ayala fired a handgun while he pursued the victim on bicycle. Police say a bullet struck a vehicle but no one was injured.
Ayala must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He must also pay $654 in fines, according to court records.
