Results of Father Pfleger's 'immaturity'

A recent letter by Bob Lowth opined that Father Pfleger should understand "that white folk aren't responsible for the violence in Chicago" and that if Father Pfleger were put in jail for a couple of months, maybe "he'll grow up a bit."

Father Pfleger is probably the ONLY white folk who truly isn't responsible for the violence in Chicago. Over 30 years ago, Father Pfleger was sent to St. Sabina's where the neighborhood was changing and the congregation and financial support were declining. Most assumed the parish would close. He has been the guiding force behind many projects, such as:

• a declining school turned into a highly respected Academy;

• ARK of St. Sabina which provides year-round education and mentoring to channel the potential of Chicago's youth in positive ways;

• creation of St. Sabina Elder Village for poverty stricken older people,;

• ERC, Employment Resource Center for youth;

• a building to shelter the homeless until more permanent housing can be found;

• Strong Futures Program which began two years ago with 50 at-risk youth ages 19-28, stabilizing their living conditions and offering support, life skills, training, education and mentoring. (All 50 have secured full-time or permanent part-time positions in diverse businesses. Another 50 will soon be mentored); and

• a strong anti-violence campaign that is galvanizing youth across the country.

Given that Father Pfleger has done so much when he is so immature, just think what he might be able to do if "he grows up."
