We need a return to traditional boundaries
I read a lot about the growing lack of order and civility in America these days. Social scientists have noted that when children are left to play without rules or boundaries, the children will gather in safe huddles. However, when children are given specific rules and boundaries by which to play, they will play in the open, boldly and freely.
Likewise in America today, because of a lack of rules or boundaries, our citizens are beginning to gather in safe huddles. Attendance at public events in America has decreased dramatically. In the past, most Americans accepted the rules of our nation's Judeo-Christian Heritage. Most made a reasonable attempt to live by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." And so, Americans lived boldly and freely within the rules and boundaries set by God.
Over a period of time, a small number of powerful and influential Americans have succeeded in abolishing many of what they call "America's ancient Christian rules of moral conduct." As a consequence, today mental and emotional illnesses are on the rise. Murder, suicide, and substance abuse are tragically ending many lives. People are frightened.
Could it be that people desire to know what the rules are before playing the game? Could it be that rules and boundaries give us all a better sense of direction and security?
And could it be that in today's disorderly and uncivil America, we very much need those "ancient Christian rules of moral conduct?"
