BP Whiting refinery in midst of $300M cleaner gas project

WHITING, Ind. (AP) - BP says a $300 million project that will reduce sulfur levels in gasoline made at its sprawling northwestern Indiana refinery could create up to 500 construction jobs.

The company says about 250 workers are working to install a naphtha hydrotreater at its Whiting refinery to meet a new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandate to make gas cleaner.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that mandate requires gas to contain less than 10 parts per million of sulfur. The current standard is 30 parts per million.

BP says it could employ as many as 500 workers at a time before the project goes online by 2020 about 20 miles southeast of Chicago.

BP completed a $4.2 billion expansion at the refinery in 2013 for processing heavy crude from Canada's tar sand deposits.
