Youth Celebrated at July 17th Waukegan Band Concert

The Waukegan Band's July 17th concert, A Teddy Bear Picnic, celebrates the Band's younger performers and the youth in the audience. The evening kicks off with the Zion Benton Township High School Band Boosters offering dinner fresh off the grill along with sodas and other treats for a fee at 6:30pm. Young concert-goers are invited to bring blankets and teddy bears and to sit down front near the band to enjoy the music.

The concert features two Waukegan Band Foundation Stiner Memorial Scholarship winners performing solo pieces. Timothy Bareika will perform John Williams's jazz-inflected score from the film "Catch Me if You Can" on the baritone saxophone. Denali Ford will feature the music of Jules Mouquet in her featured flute performance of "La Flute de Pan." To qualify for a scholarship, band members must perform the summers before and after graduation from high school and receive recommendations from their music director or private teacher. "The Waukegan Band is very much an 'inter-generational' community. Our young musicians have a tremendous opportunity to learn from our more seasoned players, and to absorb the knowledge that our veterans have accumulated over decades of playing. It is a pleasure to be able to give these young scholarship winners their moment in the spotlight."

In addition to the young soloists, the concert will feature music for the young and young at heart. Music by Henry Fillmore, Elvis Presley, and more will round out the program. The Waukegan Park District's Arts Van will also be onsite with painting, sidewalk chalk and other crafts for children.

The Waukegan Band presents a free outdoor concert every Tuesday evening through August 7th at 7:30 p.m. at the Stiner Pavilion, 201 E. Sea Horse Drive, located on the Waukegan lakefront. Concert goers enjoy great music, views of boats in the marina and harbor, and an ideal place to watch the sun set. Bring an appetite and lawn chair to A Teddy Bear Picnic and relax while listening to the music of local Lake County musicians.
