'Skating Tricks of Trade' coming to Elmhurst

Just when you thought the temperatures couldn't get any hotter, things will heat up in Elmhurst when "Skating Tricks of the Trade" takes over the local YMCA's outdoor rink for a display of roller skating skill.

"Skating Tricks" is a free public event from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Elmhurst YMCA's outdoor rink, 211 W. First St. in the city's downtown. Copresented by the Elmhurst History Museum and the Elmhurst YMCA, "Tricks" will provide a showcase for a diverse roster of talented skaters from throughout the area.

Performers will demonstrate skating styles from the 1940s to the 1970s and beyond - including shuffles, spins, jumps, Chicago's own "JB" (James Brown) style skating, and more. DJ Oliver will spin tunes from the various eras and emcee the show.

Scheduled performers at the "Skating Tricks of the Trade" event include:

• Carrie Svihlik, a former professional competitive roller skater.

• The Osiris Initiative, a Chicago youth mentoring organization focused on positive development through skating, health, and fitness.

• Chicago Roller Talent, a group of professional roller skaters who share their love of roller skating performing at special events.

• Chicago Outfit Roller Derby, an all-female flat track roller derby league based in Chicago.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and limited seating is available. Admission is free, and concession sales will be available to support the YMCA scholarship fund. A rain date is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 26 in case of inclement weather.

The event is presented in conjunction with the Elmhurst History Museum's new exhibit, "Chicago Rink Rats: The Golden Age of Roller Skating," which is open through Nov. 4.
