District 214 Community Education offers robust programming with 400 classes to community members this fall

District 214 Community Education's fall registration is now open. A wide array of new and enriching programs - about 400 classes - is offered to members of the community. Classes will start on Monday, Aug. 20, at various locations including Forest View Educational Center (FVEC), 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights.

A panel-style event on the topic, Decision 2018: A Gubernatorial Conversation (Class #1123), will be presented on Thursday, September 13, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at FVEC. Panelists will include Jaime Dominguez, lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University and Alton Miller, associate professor of communications at Columbia College with a background in politics and journalism. The event is free and registration is required.

Community Education is partnering with the Daily Herald to present Facts Matter, a free, five-part series to educate community members on how to identify lies, spin and bias that masquerade as news. The first presentation titled What is Bias? (Class #1066) is scheduled on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at FVEC. This is also a free event and registration is required.

Other exciting programs include new culinary classes for people eager to learn or improve their cooking skills. Students will learn or improve their cooking techniques and instructors will share how to make cooking fun and easy. Some of the new culinary classes are Chicken the French Way, Chocolate Strawberry Cheesecake, Easy Healthy Dinner Recipes, Gourmet Stuffed Pork Chop and Not So Classic Wedge Salad, Pin the Country Flag on the Wine (must be 21 or older) and many more.

Individuals interested in history can also choose from a selection of courses including Illinois 10 Defining Moments, Kings and Queens of England: Elizabeth I to the Royal Family, Local Haunted History, Murder Mysteries and Navigating Sources: An Introduction to Responsible Historical Research.

Looking to improve your health and wellness? This fall you can choose from 29 classes including a Stress and Wellness course to help you gain a deeper understanding about stress and stressors. Two meditation courses will be offered for the first time, Finding Ways to Pause: Meditation a Beginner's Guide and Meditation to Heal, and Empower Yourself. Students will have the opportunity to learn about meditation techniques and practices.

Several new classes in music and acting are offered, including GarageBand: Digital Audio Computer Program where students will be taught live audio recording, MIDI sequencing and auto tune, and Dramatics: Acting 101, a class where students will learn successful interpretation of material from a former Los Angeles talent agent, casting director and coach.

Other classes under the Arts category include Beads 'n Brew Triple Tile Wrap Bracelets, Holidays on Ink (a memoir/creative nonfiction writing workshop), Improvisation, Outdoor Photography, Ukulele Beginning and many more.

New yoga classes will be offered including Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Meditative Yoga, Mom/Daughter Yoga, Parent/Child Yoga and Youth Yoga. Additional new classes under the Youth, Family and Parent programs will include winter break STEM camps, boys breakdancing, cheerleading/poms and girls' hip hop.
