Indiana group seeks money to repair fire-damaged theater

MADISON, Ind. (AP) - A nonprofit that operates a historic southern Indiana theater is raising money to replace its roof following a fire last week.

Flames shot through the roof of Madison's Ohio Theatre during last Thursday's fire, but firefighters extinguished the blaze before it spread through the 80-year-old theater.

The theater, which opened in 1938, has long been a landmark in the historic Ohio River city that's about 40 miles northeast of Louisville, Kentucky.

Elizabeth Auxier is board president for the Friends of the Ohio Theatre. She tells The Madison Courier the nonprofit had been seeking donations for significant repairs, including replacing the roof, planned for the building in 2019.

But she says that in the wake of last week's fire, "now, we need to do it sooner."
