The Springs introduces new team leader

The nursing profession's loss was health administration's gain. Calli Cantrell, the new memory support assisted living manager at The Springs at Monarch Landing, had planned from a very early age to become a nurse.

"I was a CNA when I was 17. I thought I'd go into nursing and that was originally the track I was on, but then there was a biology class that changed that," she said. While not liking the study of biology, Calli, on the other hand, loved learning about management.

Calli, who is a certified dementia practitioner, earned her associate's degree in business management and is working on her bachelor's in social work. When that is complete, she'll pursue a dual MBA and master's degree in social work. In the meantime, she said, she's also taking classes to become a licensed nursing home administrator.

As the memory support assisted living manager at The Springs, Calli is responsible for directing the activities programming, helping with staff training and providing oversight regarding resident care and compliance of regulations. Her position, she said, satisfies both of her professional passions.

"I love seniors, and I love education. My role allows me to work with older adults and also educate the staff about dementia and how to care for people with memory impairment." She looks forward to expanding meaningful programming options for the residents.

Calli said that she's been extremely impressed with The Springs since the time she first visited for an interview. "It's a beautiful campus and a wonderful atmosphere. And I especially like the fact that the residents are very involved with decision-making. You don't often find that, especially in a memory support community, but it's so important because this is their life."

Six weeks into her new position, Calli reported, "I'm very excited to be here. I got to jump right in, and I have lots of support. I love the sense of community here. It's a wonderful place!"
