Casten is right for 6th District

A letter from Carol Wright suggested that Sean Casten is "wrong for the Sixth District" despite being nominated to run for the U.S. House of Representatives by Democrats in the March primary. While many of us wish for a more even distribution of women and men serving as members of Congress, I hope voters like Wright who supported a female candidate in the primary are wise enough to recognize re-electing Peter Roskam does nothing to resolve that issue.

Wright was distressed to learn a political action committee supported by Casten's father paid for negative mailers about one of his primary opponents. If, however, you want a member of Congress whose supporters play nice when it comes to opposing candidates, re-electing Roskam accomplishes nothing in that regard, either. Roskam's campaign had a website up the day after the primary filled with poorly edited pictures designed to present an unflattering image of Casten.

Good candidates in contemporary politics should be ready to defend against negative attacks. I have not heard that anything was untrue in the mailers sent out about Casten's primary opponent. I believe the mailers helped Democrats select the best general election candidate. Casten's often humorous responses to attacks from Roskam's campaign suggest he will be able to deal amicably with people across the political spectrum when serving in Washington.

Casten's well-thought-out positions on issues - particularly on the need to take action to limit the impact of climate change - are posted on his website. If you supported another Democratic candidate in the primary, I am sure you will find Casten's views are much more in line with your own than are those of Roskam, who, according to the website FiveThirtyEight, votes with Donald Trump 93.5 percent of the time.
