Indiana's bicentennial plaza fountain broken after 1 year

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A fountain that's the centerpiece of a downtown Indianapolis plaza that honors Indiana's bicentennial is broken after only about one year of operation.

The Bicentennial Plaza that includes the fountain, sculptures and seating opened in the fall of 2016 during then-Gov. Mike Pence's administration to mark the state's 200th birthday.

But The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette reports the fountain no longer functions because its pump components were damaged last winter.

Indiana Department of Administration spokeswoman Molly Deuberry Craft says that repairing the $1.1 million fountain will cost an estimated $92,000.

The fountain includes water jets and multicolored lights. It worked for a few days in fall 2016 before being shut down for that winter. It functioned regularly during summer 2017, but hasn't worked since then because of last winter's damage.
