Barrington History Museum celebrates centennial anniversary of World War I

The Barrington History Museum, 212 W. Main St., Barrington, was all aflutter on June 16. The campus was set up for a commemorative occasion to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I, which ended Nov. 11, 1918.

The history museum offered visitors a chance to meet and talk with re-enactors from Northern Illinois, who eagerly slipped into their soldier roles. Their displays of authentic weaponry and camp supplies gave visitors a rare glimpse into military life 100 years ago.

The day's main event opened with a visit from General Pershing, a highly regarded WWI figure portrayed by David Shue in full military attire. He spoke to a full capacity audience about his early life, his military career and his beliefs.

During the day there were other speakers, a tribute to WWI music, a children's activity and exhibits including vintage wedding dresses, Willmarth and Tolpo art and WWI and antique toys.

The added feature of the day was not a unique weapon, the complimentary root beer or children making care packages for the soldiers but a cake unlike any other. The cake depicted a combat scene complete with barbed wire, though not edible, a helmet and an American flag. The cake, made by the owner of Cake Walk Cakes, was as impressive to eat as it was to view.

The Barrington History Museum is open every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Special arrangements for tours during the week can be made by calling the office at (847) 381-1330. Docents are available to guide visitors through the exhibits. Those interested in becoming volunteers should call the museum office.

Since this event was such a success, the museum staff is already planning its next big program. In the meantime, look for another installment in the annual Presidential Series to be offered later this year. The focus will be on Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president.
