Crown Point official eyes banning dogs at downtown festivals

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A Crown Point councilman says he is looking into the possibility of banning dogs from festivals in the city's downtown.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that Councilman Bob Clemons was alarmed when he recently noticed an abundance of dogs at two festivals.

Clemons says he's worried hot pavement might hurt the dogs' paws. He called it a "big issue" and also voiced concern about dog attacks.

The city does not have an ordinance governing dogs at festivals and Mayor David Uran told Clemons that police can't do anything without one.

Uran says the council's ordinance committee would have to look at the matter further and any possible legislation would have to accommodate service dogs.
