Aurora man gets 15 years for having 2 kilos of cocaine

An Aurora man received a 15-year prison term Friday for possessing a large amount of cocaine that prosecutors said he intended to distribute, the Kane County state's attorney's office announced Monday.

Gilberto Montes, 39, was convicted of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver on Sept. 28. The charge stemmed from a 2015 Homeland Security investigation that found 2 kilos of cocaine - along with drug packaging materials and more than $15,000 in cash - in his home, prosecutors said.

In addition to the prison time, the judge in Montes' case imposed a $236,000 fine equal to the street value of the drugs, officials said.

Prosecutors said Montes must serve at least 75 percent of his sentence and will receive credit for the 1,106 days he already served in jail, meaning he will spend at least eight years behind bars.
