Man charged in neglect of horses at southern Indiana barn

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - A man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities say two dead horses and a starving third horse were found in a barn in southern Indiana.

The Herald-Times reports that Jeffrey D. Richardson of Bloomington turned himself in Friday at the Monroe County Jail after being charged last week with three counts of animal cruelty and two counts of failure to properly dispose of a dead animal.

He posted bond and was released. Court records don't list a lawyer for Richardson, who is due in court Friday for a hearing.

WXIN-TV reports the Monroe County sheriff's office last month found the horses following a tip. The surviving horse was recovering under a veterinarian's care. The veterinarian determined that horse had been surviving on dirt and wood from his stall.
