Three dogs euthanized after attacking woman in Elgin
Three stray dogs, including one that bit a woman in an Elgin forest preserve, have been captured and euthanized, officials said.
The woman was attacked about 11:30 a.m. June 1 in Bluff Spring Fen Forest Preserve, an Elgin police report states. The dogs are described as "pit bull type dogs."
The dogs were captured and transferred to the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge with assistance from Elgin and Cook County animal control, said Stacina Stagner, spokeswoman for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
The dogs were checked for identification, including tags and chips, said Frank Shuftan, spokesman for the Cook County board president's office. "As none were found and no owner could be located, and because of the biting incident, they were euthanized," he said.
Tissue samples were sent to the University of Illinois for rabies testing and results should available next week, he said.
The woman, from Gurnee, received three stitches to her leg at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Dogs should be on leash at all times in the Cook County forest preserves unless visitors are using off-leash dog areas.
