Fire fighting and cancer

Pat Devaney's May 31 letter posed some interesting ideas that deserve clarification. There are literally thousands of things that could cause cancer.

I emphasize the word could. Anything in gross excess could be cancer causing.

The statement "burning asbestos" deserves scrutiny. Asbestos does not burn, melt maybe, at four-digit temperatures. That is why it was used for fire proofing and thermal insulation. Perhaps the current president of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois needs to be trained properly and spend some time in the field?
