Unattended candle sparks Elgin house fire

No injuries were reported Sunday after an unattended candle sparked a fire that damaged an Elgin home, authorities said.

Elgin firefighters called at 2:03 p.m. to the home in the 900 block of Ford Avenue arrived to find smoke coming from a window at the front of the home.

The homeowner was outside and told crews that everyone was out of the home. Firefighters went to work and the blaze was extinguished in less than 10 minutes, fire officials said.

Damage was limited to a bedroom, but there was smoke damage throughout the home.

No firefighters were injured and one resident was assessed at the scene by ambulance crews, but did not want to be treated or taken to a hospital.

Fire officials said it is important to keep candles away from other flammable materials and never leave an open flame unattended.
