Prosecutors drop sexual misconduct charges against teacher

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - Charges were dropped against a former East Chicago junior high school teacher accused of sexual misconduct with two students.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that prosecutors filed a motion in May to dismiss the case against Paul E. Chandler Jr.

The 40-year-old was a math and gym teacher at Block Junior High School. He was charged in October 2016 with felony child molesting and sexual misconduct.

A 13-year-old girl told police that Chandler touched her arm and thigh in a way that made her uncomfortable.

Court records state that a 14-year-old girl said Chandler sat behind her in math class, touched her inappropriately with his knee, pulled her hair and said: "You know I'm fine."

Prosecutors say they were unable to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
