Affidavit reveals details in Terre Haute woman's slaying

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - An affidavit says the man charged with killing a Terre Haute woman whose body was found in her submerged SUV fatally bludgeoned her after she shot him during a burglary at her home.

The affidavit released by prosecutors Tuesday says 77-year-old Alice "Anita" Oswald began carrying a gun for protection and investigators believe she came home Nov. 9, 2017, to find 55-year-old Kenneth R. Pitts Jr. and two others in her basement. The Tribune-Star reports the affidavit says she shot Pitts in the face.

It says a wooden-handled hatchet possibly used to bludgeon her was found in her SUV after it was pulled from a Vigo County pond with her body inside in January.

Pitts was arrested Friday in Nevada. Warrants charge him with murder, burglary, arson and other crimes.
