Inclusive curriculum would improve education
I recently read some upsetting letters to the editor opposing the Inclusive Curriculum Bill (SB3249). The legislation would include the contributions of LGBTQ people in history curriculum in Illinois public schools.
When I first read the letters, I was angry. However, I realized the authors did not have the benefit of an inclusive curriculum.
As a straight white male with a gay child, I, too, lacked knowledge about the contributions of LGBTQ people to society. Without even a basic education, I was destined to continue my cycle of ignorance. But I educated myself because I wanted to support my child. We all need to support and affirm our LGBTQI children, neighbors and selves, and that's why I support this legislation.
An inclusive curriculum is about building bridges and taking down walls.
It creates a learning environment where our LGBTQI children and families can see themselves reflected in the classroom. An inclusive curriculum is about educating our children properly and telling the whole story of history.
All of our children should live in a world where they feel like they matter, where they have a sense of belonging, and where they have an equal chance at a bright future. Ask your state representative to support SB3249. It will literally save lives.
