This family's deck space is limited. The separation from sun and shade areas is a great start. However, the area needs to be further defined, such as a lounge area, a dining area. Creating rooms will make this space more efficient.
Budget: $5,000
Suggestions
• Add a small paver patio with a seat wall stepping down off the deck to increase entertaining space. Use concrete or clay pavers that will compliment the home. This patio will provide overflow with seating when entertaining many guests.
• Add a fire pit to the patio area for use in spring, fall or cool summer nights. Consider adding low voltage landscape lighting on pergola, deck and patio to bring it all together.
• Add a lounge area on sunny side of deck. A sofa set that is self-contained allows you to store the cushions inside the furniture so no deck box or additional storage is needed. Add a dining table and chairs under the existing pergola. Perhaps get a table with a half leaf that goes down against the wall so seating is always available for four, and expands to allow more guests when it is opened. Adding an outdoor rug will also make the space feel like a separate room. Perhaps hang an outdoor light fixture from the pergola.
4) Soften the perimeter of the yard to create a vista or view from the entertaining area. Add anchor plants and enhance with a few blooming perennials or small shrubs that will give some privacy and a focal point for seasonal interest.
