Softball: St. Viator graduates to regional semifinal

Softball

St. Viator' softball team won its play-in game of the Class 3A Ridgewood regional on Monday at Heritage Park in Wheeling 22-0 over Chicago ASPIRA (Business and Finance).

Gianna Saverino threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced in the four-inning game as Saint Viator (6-24) moved on to Tuesday's semifinal against the host Rebels.

Cece Kaiser led the Lions with 3 hits and a triple while Annie Sweeney, Maggie VanValkenburg, Saverino and Elise Bollard each had two. Sweeney belted her first homer of the season. Nicole Ardito added a double.

It was graduation day for St. Viator so the Lions' three seniors - Haley Robinson, Jessica Taylor and Sweeney - headed back to the school to receive their diplomas.
