Baseball: Wins for Hersey, Prospect, Fremd
Jake Irwin took a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to help host Hersey picked up a 3-2 nonconference baseball rivalry win and snap St. Viator's win streak at six Friday.
Starter Hunter Luke and reliever Brian Massaccesi both pitched well for Hersey (14-18-1), with Massaccesi (4 IP, 4 hits) getting the win.
Hunter Johnson, Bryce Hellgeth and Jack Mahoney had 2 hits apiece for St. Viator (18-14).
Hersey was limited to 3 hits by Hellgeth over 8-plus innings.
Daniel Clawson had a triple, and Irwin grounded into a fielder's choice that scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Prospect 8, Hoffman Estates 0: Knights starter Ryan Howe didn't allow host Hoffman Estates much, and Prospect's Anthony Catalano provided plenty of offensive production as both teams wrapped up their Mid-Suburban League slate.
Catalano homered and doubled, finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Richie Baczek, John Czeslawsi (3 RBI), Anthony Composto and Matt McAleer each had 2 hits apiece as Prospect (18-11, 10-6) lashed out 13 hits total.
Howe went the distance, allowing 4 singles and striking out seven.
Fremd 11, Lake Zurich 1 (5 inn.): The host Vikings put 10 runs on the visiting Bears in the fourth inning to tune up for the postseason with a nonconference win.
Connor Giusti and Austin Higgins both doubled, and Luke Seidel and Tommy Wingen had triples for Fremd (15-11).
It was more than enough run support for winning pitcher Ashton Statz, who allowed 1 hit and struck out five in 4⅓ innings.
