Baseball: Prospect goes deep; Fremd edges Conant in 8

Prospect powered up and past host Wheeling 10-5 on Wednesday in Mid-Suburban East baseball.

The Knights had 3 homers - solo shots from Anthony Catalano and John Czeslawski, plus a fourth-inning grand slam from Richie Baczek.

Czeslawski also had a double and scored 3 runs while finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Anthony Composto had 3 hits for Prospect (15-10, 8-5), which won its third straight.

Winning pitcher Mack Malczewski worked 5 innings, and Bryce Jensen pitched 2 innings and earned a save.

Eric Konrath and Cade Zalewski each had a pair of hits for Wheeling (12-14, 4-9).

Fremd 4, Conant 3 (8 inn.): Luke Seidel walked and stole a base before Tom Cermak drove him in with the decisive run in Fremd's top half of the eighth inning.

The made a winner of reliever Peter Hiller, who worked the last 2 innings for Fremd and came up with a 1-2-3 finish in the bottom of the eighth.

Mitch Huntley hit a solo homer for the Vikings (12-9, 6-7). Cermak was 2-for-4 with a double, and Nick Rattin and Tommy Wingen also had doubles.

Ashton Statz started for Fremd and allowed 1 earned run over 5 innings.

Jack Reiger had a solo homer for Conant (13-12-1, 7-6), and Colin Broeker contributed a double.

Hoffman Estates 8, Schaumburg 5: Richie Banas, Kyle Krogstad and Dakota Slingerland had 2 hits apiece to help the visting Hawks earn an MSL West win.

Krogstad tripled and drove in a run, Slingerland had a double and Jon Keller doubled and drove in a run for the Hawks (7-15, 3-11).

Banas pitched the first 6⅓ innings and got the win, and Kurt Foy got the final two outs and earned a save.

Schaumburg (5-17, 3-11) got plenty of pop at the plate from leadoff man Nick Calip, who finished with a homer, a triple and 2 RBI. Jack Lancaster also had a solo homer and finished 2-for-4.

Buffalo Grove 10, Rolling Meadows 0 (5 inn.): Buffalo Grove had ample offense, and the Bison put their defense to good use as well in playing an error-free game behind starter TJ Constertina.

The result was a 5-inning, 1-hit shutout for Constertina, who struck out five and walked three as the MSL East champs improved to 22-4 overall.

Constertina, Zack Fricke both doubled and drove in 2 runs. Sean Jacobs (double) and Rio Komatani both finished 2-for-3.

Nate Pardini came up with the only hit, a double, for Meadows (10-12-1, 7-7).
