Baseball: Johnson pitches Viator past St. Pat
Hunter Johnson limited host St. Patrick to 6 hits as St. Viator's baseball team won 5-1 on Tuesday.
It was the second straight win for the Lions against the Shamrocks in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.
Johnson struck out three and walked none in a complete-game effort. St. Viator's defenders committed just 1 error.
Casey Kmet finished 2-for-3 with a double, stole 3 bases and scored twice for St. Viator (14-13), and Johnson, Bryce Hellgeth and Michael Ruth each drove in 1 run.
Conant 4, Addison Trail 3 (8 inn.): Tyler Hedman's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Sam Ryan with the decisive run as the Cougars picked up a nonconference win.
Ryan reached base with his second double of the game with two outs. He finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Colin Broeker also doubled twice, and Matt Majer drove in a run for Conant (13-11-1). Cole Kilty (2⅓ IP, 1 hit, no runs) earned a victory in relief of Luke Pontikis.
Leyden 11, Willowbrook 6: The visiting Eagles won against the Warriors for the second straight day in West Suburban Gold play.
Johnny Auge finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI as the the Eagles took command with an 8-run second inning.
Alex Duarte and Nick Herrera drove in 2 runs apiece, and Sebastian Rosario (double) and Jose Solis (triple) contributed extra-base hits.
Danny Flores allowed 4 earned runs over 6⅓ innings to earn the victory.
Elk Grove 12, Hoffman Estates 9: The visiting Grens produced 10 hits, drew 4 walks and took advantage of 5 Hawks errors to claim an MSL victory.
Elk Grove improved to 7-14-1 and 4-9 against MSL foes behind impressive efforts from Nick Hofmann (2-for-4, homer, 2 RBI), Ryne Singsank (2-for-3, homer, 2 RBI) and Shane Crimmins (2-for-3, 2 RBI). Mark Matos and Zach Mahoney drove in 2 runs apiece, and Sebastian Garza and Xander Rojahn had doubles.
There was no shortage of offense for Hoffman Estates (6-15, 2-11). Dylan Bloom had a double and a triple, Tom Curcio and Kyle Krogstad both doubled twice and Richie Banas drove in 2 runs.
