Elgin History Museum to offer candlelight and architectural tours

On Friday, May 11, visit the Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St., in candlelight and meet characters from the past as you go from room to room from 7 to 9 p.m. Wine and cheese refreshments will be served as well.

New this year, tickets will include the price of your candlelight (in the form of a flashlight) which you can take home!

Join a "Mid-Century Modern Downtown Historic Tour" from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 14. This downtown walking tour, hosted by the Downtown Neighbors Association's Design Committee, is an opportunity to explore the modern movement in Elgin's civic and commercial structures. The tour will be led by Bill Briska, president of the Elgin Area Historical Society, and Christen Sundquist, historic preservation planner for the City of Elgin. There is a $5 suggested donation. Elgin has a treasure trove of residential architecture. This program explains how buildings can be used to interpret the history of Elgin, or almost any other city. Local historian Bill Briska will present "Elgin: An Outdoor Museum of Architecture" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, in the Meadows Community Room at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. Celebrate Illinois' bicentennial year by learning more about favorite president and show off your Lincoln knowledge to win prizes during the "Brown Bag Lunch: Abraham Lincoln Quiz" from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at the museum. Past Elgin Area Historical Society president Carl Flaks will host the quiz. Bring your lunch and play the game! There will be free admission to the museum as part of International Museum Day.

The Elgin Area Historical Society will co-host the Lords Park Painting unveiling on Sunday, May 20, at the Lords Park Pavilion with the Elgin Parks and Recreation Department and the Friends of the Lords Park Zoo. The portraits of the Lords will be unveiled in their new location at the pavilion and a program with light refreshments will begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Jerry Turnquist will present the "History of Lords Park" and Linda Rock will be socially mixing, portraying Mary Carpenter.
