Baseball: St. Charles East, Batavia notch UEC River wins

The St. Charles East baseball team used a 4-run first inning to help grab an 8-6 Upstate Eight River win over visiting Elgin Monday.

Cole Conn (2-for-4) led the Saints (14-8-1, 12-4) with 3 RBI and a double while Charlie Charpenter (2-for-3), Drew Conn, Pat Griffin and Ryan Richa each had 1 RBI. Winning pitcher Connor Dunfee allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts in 3 innings pitched.

But Elgin (6-18, 3-13) got to the Saints' relievers, scoring 3 runs bridging the fourth and fifth innings and supplied a 3-run seventh before East closed it down.

Kyle Coates (2B) and John Fortmann each had 2 hits for the Maroons while Tim Mitchell led the team in RBI with 2.

Batavia 8, Streamwood 5: The Bulldogs trailed the Sabres 5-1 after 3 ½ innings but used a 5-run fourth and a 2-run fifth to get a UEC River win. Jared Martin (2-for-4, 2 RBI) provided a 2-run single, Michael Niemiec (2-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled in 2 runs and Blake Carlson's RBI groundout capped the big inning. Cole Nelson and Joey Sartain also had 2 hits for Batavia (15-8, 11-6), who got a win from Dylan Schick (4 IP, 4H, 2ER, 8K, 1BB) in relief. AJ Reyna (RBI) and Anthony Caruso (2 RBI) each doubled for Streamwood (10-11, 5-10). Colin Bielinski and Cody Motykowski had 2 hits each.

Marmion 4, Mt. Carmel 3: Down 3-2 in the seventh, Nick Talarico's single to center with the bases loaded gave the Cadets a walk-off win in Chicago Catholic League action. Jake Carslon (2-for-3) and Jack Molenhouse (1 hit) scored the winning runs for Marmion (9-10-1, 5-5) after reaching with 2 outs. Talarico went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and also got the win in relief, making just 7 pitches. Starter Brandon McPherson went 5 ⅔ innings and gave up 5 hits, 3 runs on 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.

CL South 9, Hampshire 5: The Gators (9-11-1, 6-9) rallied from 4-2 down in the fifth with 7 runs in the final 3 innings to down the Whips in FVC action. South outhit Hampshire 12-7, scored 2 in the fifth, 3 in the sixth and 2 in the seventh as Noah Tyrell (2-for-4) and Harrison Hinz (4-for-4) each had 3 RBI. Jacob Bimbi also had 2 hits and Belker Fuentes (3 IP, 2H, 1 ER, 3K, 3BB) earned the win in relief. Andrew Krajecki doubled for Hampshire (11-15, 4-11) while Kevin Michaelson (RBI) and Nicholas Sladek each had 2 hits.

Dundee-Crown 11, CL Central 1 (5 inn.): The Chargers (5-20, 3-14) drilled out 14 hits and had a 6-run fourth to down the Tigers quickly in FVC action. Ryan Lascano led D-C with 3 hits while Erik Hedmark (RBI), Zach Hahn (RBI), Justin Lawson (2B, 2 RBI), Justin Colon (RBI) and Henry Smith (RBI) collected 2 hits each. With a lot of cushion, Nick Gregory got the win on the mound in 5 innings pitched. He allowed 1 unearned run on 4 hits on 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Huntley 3, McHenry 2: The Red Raiders (18-5, 11-4) scored all 3 runs in the third to get a win over the Warriors. AJ Henkle went 3-for-3 while Jason Peters, Chris Costantino and Joey Petryniec each had 1 RBI. It was just enough scoring for Nick Laxner, who pitched all 7 innings and gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk to get the win.

Prairie Ridge 12, Jacobs 6: In this FVC loss, the Golden Eagles (13-8-1, 9-5) never led but plated 5 runs in the fifth and totaled 10 hits. Daniel Murray provided 2 hits and a solo homer while Liam Oreskovich (2-for-3), Braeden Wegner and Andrew Balkcom all doubled.

ACC 12, Fenton 2: In 5 innings, the Chargers (15-10, 6-8) pounded out 14 hits to come away with this Metro Suburban win. Alex Rakas went 3-for-4 with a 3-run homer and 4 RBI while Hunter Darnell was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 doubles. Kyle Czerak, Mikey Elliott and Mac Doherty each had 2 hits. Czerak got a 4-inning win, allowing just 5 hits on 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts.

Burlington Central 4, Johnsburg 2: The Rockets (15-9, 10-3) got 2 in the sixth thanks to a Zach Schutta double and a Colton Wallace single that gave Central a late Kishwaukee River win. Schutta went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI and a walk while Caden Scott was 2-for-2. Wallace, Andrew Griffin and Jake Mellinger each had 1 RBI. Starter Danny Kinney threw 100 pitches in 6 innings for the win. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits to go with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks. Tyler Perez notched the 7-pitch save with 1 strikeout and no hits or walks allowed.

Kaneland 8, Morris 3: The Knights (15-7, 7-3) used 14 hits and 4-run sixth as insurance to get a NI Big 12 win. Nick Ortegel and Robbie Dudzinski (RBI) both tallied 3 hits while Zach Farris (2B) and Thomas Shaw each had 2. Nik Panico drilled a 2-run homer and provided 5 innings of 2-hit ball to get the win. He allowed 3 unearned runs, 3 strikeouts and 4 walks in 99 pitches.

Timothy Christian 5, St. Edward 3: Matthew Schimbke (2-for-2) had 3 RBI for the Wave (6-20, 3-13), who complied just 6 hits in Metro Suburban play.
