Woman pleads guilty in Evansville motel death of boyfriend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - An Evansville woman accused with her brother of fatally beating her boyfriend has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports 55-year-old Cheryl Rumsey entered the plea Friday in Vanderburgh Circuit Court. She originally was charged with murder in the August death of 53-year-old Paul Phillips.

Court records show Rumsey agreed to a sentence of no more than 20 years. She's due to be sentenced June 21.

Rumsey and her brother, 54-year-old Steven Bailey, were arrested after Phillips was found dead with severe injuries to his head and face in a room of the Evansville Inn and Suites.

Bailey faces a June 11 trial.

Police have said an argument escalated to a fight and Rumsey kept kicking Phillips after he fell to the floor.
