Softball: Antioch powers up in sweep of Z-B

Antioch's softball team continued to slug the ball on Saturday, hitting 7 home runs in a nonconference doubleheader sweep of visiting Zion-Benton.

The Sequoits won the opener 21-9 and took the second game 14-6 to improve to 14-6 on the season. Antioch has won 14 of its last 16 games.

In Game 1, Antioch got homers from Deighton Butenschoen, Piper Foote, Mollie Wagner and Hailey Webb, who provided a pinch-hit shot with a runner aboard. Foote (3-for-5), who had 5 RBI, also had a double and single to pace a 16-hit attack.

The Sequoits got 2 hits apiece from Kaylee Schreiner (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Abby Pyburn (2-for-5), Butenschoen (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI), Katie Sorenson (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) and Wagner (2-for-2, 3 RBI). Ashlyn Sundell walked three times and drove in a run, and Avery Malicki had a single and 2 walks. Jerianne Bonaguidi earned the win.

In Game 2, Wagner hit a solo home run. Megan Lawrence (3-for-3, double, 4 RBI) and Malicki (2-for-3, 4 RBI) also went deep. Sorenson was 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBI, and Foote went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Winning pitcher Ashley Hoerning allowed 1 earned run and 2 hits in 4 innings of relief.

Maine South 13, Vernon Hills 1: Delaney Bowen had a double for Vernon Hills.
