30 months for East Dundee man charged with robbing teen at ATM

A 39-year-old East Dundee man who was charged with taking a teen to make a $300 withdrawal from a West Dundee ATM was sentenced to 2½ years in prison.

Leon Chatman, of the 200 block of River Haven Drive, pleaded guilty last week to felony aggravated use of a weapons with no Firearm Owner's Identification card and was sentenced to 30 months in prison and ordered to pay $960 in court fees and $300 restitution, according to Kane County court records.

In exchange for the plea, which was accepted by Judge Clint Hull, prosecutors dismissed more severe charges of armed robbery and armed violence, the latter of which was a felony that carried a prison term of 6 to 30 years with no chance of probation.

Police said Chatman threatened the 19-year-old, who he knew, and made him drive to an ATM at a West Dundee bank on Dec. 27 and withdraw $300.

After Chatman took the money, he let the teen go.

No one was injured and Chatman was arrested later that day, still in possession of the handgun he was accused of using during the ATM visit, police said.

Under state law, Chatman can have his prison term cut in half for good behavior. He also gets credit for 120 days served at the Kane County jail where he was held on $200,000 bail while the case was pending.
