Michigan City's zoo sees record attendance amid renovations

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) - The Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City set a new attendance record after more than 100,000 people visited last year.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports the increase is spurred by a five-year renovation plan funded by money from Blue Chip Casino. The zoo is in the third year of the strategic plan. Zoo director Jamie Huss says the plan includes expanding and revamping exhibits and improving animal habitats. Lions came back to the zoo two years ago with an expanded habitat. There's also a new deck and picnic facility.

Upcoming projects include reconstruction of a habitat that's now home to lemurs and ducks and renovation of the Rotary Children's Castle.

The zoo was founded in 1928 and many of its building were constructed by the Works Progress Administration.
