Baseball: Wheeling, finally, stops Elk Grove

Wheeling rallied for 3 runs in the seventh inning to win the completion of game that started on April 11, at Elk Grove.

On that day, the teams played 6 full innings and were tied at 4-4.

Wheeling junior Jeremy Kim came up with a run-scoring single as play resumed Thursday in the top of the seventh inning, and the Wildcats added 2 more runs in winning 7-5. Kevin Pavia and Joe Jordan started the inning with singles, and DJ Godlewski moved them along with a sacrifice bunt.

Bobby Balzano came up with a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning and later scored for Elk Grove. But Godlewski worked through an error and got the last two batters on popouts for a save.

Patrick Cooney, who pitched 6 innings on Day 1 of the game, earned the victory.

Drew Roberts finished 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI, and Kyle Bullock went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Wheeling improved to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in the MSL East, while the Grens slipped to 5-8-1 and 2-4.

Schaumburg 7, Prospect 6: The host Saxons produced a 5-run third inning, with the key blow a 2-run homer from Matt D'Orazio, in Mid-Suburban League play.

Justin Schoefernacker finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Saxons (4-11, 2-6), and D'Orazio finished with 3 RBI.

Starter Zac Studzinski got the win after allowing 3 earned runs in 3⅓ innings. Joey Fink and Sam Phalen combined on 2⅔ scoreless relief innings, and Peter Kandefer pitched a perfect seventh inning to get a save.

Richie Baczek was 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored for Prospect (10-7, 3-4). Anthony Catalano doubled twice, and John Czeslawski went 2-for-4 and drove in 2 runs for the Knights.

Prospect starter Bryce Jensen gave up 7 runs in 3 innings, but only 1 of those runs were earned.

Benet 9, St. Viator 7: The host Redwings got ahead early with a 6-run second inning, then managed to hang on in East Suburban Catholic Conference play despite a big late rally by the Lions.

St. Viator (10-8, 2-4) trailed 9-3 heading into the seventh inning. But the Lions rallied for 4 runs before making the first out of the frame.

Key hits in the seventh were a double from Ryan Stejskal, a 2-run single from Michael Wittich and a 2-run single from Conor Warner.

Bryce Hellgeth finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of doubles for St. Viator. Wittich ended up 3-for-4, and Casey Kmet, Kevin Wilhite and Warner each finished with 2 hits.

Elgin 3, Hoffman Estates 1: The visiting Maroons stole home twice in the first inning, then added an unearned insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to claim a nonconference victory.

Matthew Turner started for Elgin and lasted 5 innings. He and two relievers allowed Hoffman Estates (4-10) a total of 4 hits - an RBI double by Dakota Slingerland and singles by Josh Magers, Richie Banas and Kurt Foy.

Maine West 13, Deerfield 2 (6 inn.): David Roscoe drove in runs in three different innings to help the visiting Warriors roll in Central Suburban North play.

Roscoe finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and 4 RBI.

He had plenty of productive company in a lineup which produced 8 extra-base hits and 18 hits total.

Cory Scholler doubled twice, and Matt Mustari, Matt Johnston, Josh Wastyn and Justin Scholler also had two-baggers.

Emmett Olson finished 2-for-3 for Maine West (5-9), and Wastyn allowed 2 runs over 4⅓ innings to get the pitching decision.

Christian Liberty 9, South Beloit 5: The host Chargers pounded out 13 hits, including doubles by David Law and Ethan Oskroba, as Ben Law earned the pitching decision.
